Crankshaft position sensor

Image
The crankshaft position sensor is a transducer positioned very close to the crankshaft, which uses hall effect to read the speed of the crankshaft. To understand the use of the sensor we must understand what the crankshaft does in the engine. The crankshaft with the help of the camshafts controls all the strokes in the engine ( intake, compression, power and exhaust). This action is what produces the energy that drives the transition, the compressor, the water pump and the alternator. The crankshaft position sensor helps send messages to the ECU (engine control unit) which sends back information that controls the valves, Spark plugs, injector nozzle telling them which cylinder is ready for their action. A bad crankshaft position sensor can frustrate you, and you might be thinking " is any witch following me from the village". Symptoms of bad Crankshaft sensor. Blinking of check engine light. Ignition malfunction Stalling and backfiring Engine vibration When you ...

Symptoms of bad fuel pump

Image
The fuel pump provides the force used to drive the fuel from the tank to the combustion chamber. For combustion to occur there is a certain amount of fuel that must mix with a certain amount of air (Air/Fuel ratio) in the presence of a spark. If there is trouble in the supply of fuel, that means the performance of the engine will reduce. Symptoms of bad fuel pump: 1. Car hesitating to start or won't start. 2. Car jerking. 3. Loss of power from engine. 4. Loss of power when climbing a hilly road.

How to replace a power steering

Image
The power steering is an aid system that helps reduce the force needed to turn a steering wheel. You don't want to drive a car with power steering issues. How to identify power steering faults. Whining sound: If you hear a whining noise while turning your steering, the power steering pump is failing and needs to be replaced. Stiff steering: the steering gets stiff when the power steering pump fails. Squealing noise when you start the car. Steering wheel slow to respond. Never allow the pump go bad due to lack of oil, this can spoil the steering rack too.  Before changing the pump check if there is any leakage ( check the condition of the serpentine belt, if it has spoilt due to contact with power steering fluid). Also check the level of the fluid. If low fill to guage and check again. Steps to changing power steering pump. Remove the hose taking fluid out of the pump. Remove the sensor plug. Unscrew the securing bolts. Remove the serpentine belt. Put power stee...

Anti- lock braking system

Image
Can a car be driven without the ABS?. The answer is yes, but without its benefits. The ABS is a safety system built into a car, to prevents the wheels from locking during braking and allows it maintain traction with the road. NB. A car doesn't stop immediately after the driver hits the brake pedal, but moves a little further. So what happens to your car during this time it moves further. The ABS prevents the car from full lock, thereby making your car steerable. What the ABS does is that it locks the wheel and then releases it to rotate, it continues this cycle until the car stops .   The significance of this is that during the time the wheel is rotating the driver can actually steer it to any direction to dodge an obstacle. But a car without the ABS will continue in an unstable manner until  it hits the obstacle, it just like watching your own death and saying hail Mary ( let the brake save me). The ABS reduces the braking distance and makes the car stable durin...

10 Top selling car brands in 2016

Image
2016 was a hell of a year for the automobile industry, having some cars selling more than they did in 2015 and some other brands selling lower than they did. Who will have imagined, "Mercedes Benz did not make the list". Volkswagen: They climbed all the way from No. 3 position to the driver seat. Volkswagen with the help of Golf and polo sold 10,102,036 ( which is 11.1% of the market sales) of the global sale in 2016. They are also the makers of Skoda, Audi and Bentley. Toyota: Formerly in the first position has moved a little bit down due to the Volkswagen dogged sales. Although Toyota produced the global top selling car ( Corolla). The fact about tyre pressure

Image
Most car owners feel that the bigger the car the more pressure the tyre needs. They feel if you fill lets say a 35psi on a Honda accord then you should fill a 45psi on an ML 500, because the ML's tyre is bigger. It is not always this way. Let's take for instance, you have 50,000 molecules of air in a room, and we transfer this 50,000 molecules into a ball. what do you think will happen, the ball will actually have more pressure than the room. The reason being that pressure is dependent on the amount of  molecules bombarding the walls of the container. Pressure= Force/ area So the larger the area the bigger the force/ air molecules needed to maintain the same pressure. Therefore 35psi in a 265/65R17 will give out more air molecules than same pressure in a 195/65R15. So it is wrong practice to put more air than required.

How to check milage on Range rover autobiography

A client came to my place and asked me to check the milage on his car cause he has tried it to and to no avail.playing with the buttons and knobs on the steering and dash won't help you here like in Toyota and Honda. what about oil

Image
Most car users neglect their oils, even though the oil is like the  blood of the engine, this is because the oil not only lubricates your engine but it also acts as coolant to the engine, it help absorb the chemical formed during combustion . In this article we will be discussing a lot about oils, how to pick the right oil for your car, how to know a high grade oil and the difference between the types of oils we have. Oil Category: The API (America Petroleum Institute) certifies and rate oils according to their quality. Some oils are meant for modern cars while some others for very old ones. While buying oil check for the API donut logo and see what is written on it. On the logo is written a two letter code. (SA- SN, its only the letter k and i that are skipped). This codes will help you know the kind of oil you should use for your car. SA - SH are obsolete now, they are used on vehicles from 1930 - before 2000. SJ is used on 2001 and older cars. SL is used on 2004 and o...

oil light

Image
Oil is used for lubricating the moving parts in a car engine. Every car has the quantity of oil it needs for adequate lubrication. The oil light does not only show when their is low oil pressure, it also show on the dashboard when the car is put on ignition ( and it goes off after a few seconds, this is normal).     Reasons why oil light stays standby on the dashboard. Low oil level in the engine; check the level of oil in the engine and if short of oil gauge it till it gets to the level stipulated by the manufacturer. Oil leakage; if the sump drain plug is not well fitted, the oil will leak out of the sump thereby reducing the oil pressure and in turn triggering the light to show. Blocked oil filter; when the oil filter is blocked it reduces the pressure at which oil should flow. Oil burning in the combustion chamber. Bad oil pump         Bad oil switch
