Brake pad wear indicator
The brake is one of the most important safety/ operational part of the vehicle, therefore car manufacturers have put so many measures in place to determine when the brake pad is due for a change.
Mind you, the brake pad is made of materials that wear off easily in other to make the brake rotor (disc), which is more expensive, not to wear off easily while in braking and also to reduce energy loss due to heat caused by friction (We will talk about the essence of brake pads and brake pad materials in our teaching). So if you have a brake pad that doesn't wear off then you bought yourself a damaging tool.
Here are the different brake wear indicators on an automobile:
1. Ocular brake indicator: this are grooves made on the brake pad. One must constantly check the brake pads to know when the brake pads flattens with the grove.
2. Mechanical metal plate indicator: A metal plate is attached on some brake pads so that when the brake is due for change the plate can touch the surface of the disc to make a whistling noise.
3. Electronic Indicators: This uses sensors attached on the brake pads. When the brake gets to the point where it needs to be change a light pops up on the dashboard.
Break failure can occur when one is adamant to change his brake pad after seeing this signs.
